Friday, August 17th the Developers Student Group(DSC) was launched on the African Leadership University Mauritius campus.

So, what went up?

A spaceship. *chuckles*

It’s not unusual to get asked about an event, “so what went down?” However, for the DSC, it was a launch of something great — building a tech community hence, “what went up?”

So what’s the Developer Student Club?

Learning to code is quite an exciting experience for a beginner. However, over time, with knocking deadlines, lots and lots of new technologies to learn and trying to live our “best lives”, one can get lost in-between.

You start asking questions like:

“Now, I can print out Hello World, what’s next?”

“How do I make my first pull request and commit to open source?”

“There’s a lot of new stuff to learn out there. Where do I start from?”

Here’s where the DSC comes in; to equip us with those skills and enable us solve problems using technology.

Why you should be excited about the DSC?

“The problem you solve is more important than the code you write,” is a quote that has been making the rounds lately and it does resonate deeply with me.

The DSC is set up in such a way that we groom our skills as developers as well as being changemakers in our immediate environment.

Just like Angela mentioned at the event “what if we developed an App that could have panini delivered to us on campus?”

Exciting, isn’t it?

We’ll also be extending our DSC love to other campuses on the Island with time.

So, buckle-up! Exciting times are ahead of us.

DSC @ALU Launch in Pictures

Angela introduces the DSC to us and the perks of being a club member.
Tabot talks about the role of an active tech community on campus and urges us to keep in mind the PPV (Persistence, People and Vision) formula so, we’re always moving on the right track.
DSC @ ALU student leaders. Ebenezer introduced us to using GCP (Google Cloud Platform) for hosting our sites. It sounds exciting and so, does the idea of a 1-year $300 credit.
Ice-breakers, laughter and everyone got swagged up!

Who Can Join DSC @ ALU?

Engineering and computing students are welcome to join the club. All returning computing and engineering students, you are most welcome; the club’s arms are wide-open.

Many cheers to community building and skill development!
